For over 30 years, Peter has been a well-known and friendly face in our bus driving community. He started his journey in 1994 at the Stuart Park Depot, part of the former Territory Transit team, now part of CDC Northern Territory. Peter quickly found a welcoming and supportive environment, thanks in part to his first manager, Geoff.
Originally from East Timor, Peter was seeking a secure role that would allow him to apply his experience with heavy vehicles, having driven trucks in his home country. Despite a language barrier, he was drawn to the job because of the stability it offered and the opportunity to connect with people daily. Now, 30 years on, Peter is CDC’s longest serving employee in the Northern Territory.
Over the years, Peter has seen many changes, including advancements in bus technology, like the introduction of air-conditioned buses in the late 90s. However, the supportive and friendly culture within the company has remained a constant, playing a major role in why Peter has stayed for so long. He’s built lifelong friendships and received unwavering support from management, making his time in the business truly rewarding.
A standout memory for Peter is the camaraderie he shared with his late colleague, Ralph, who would bring goose from hunting trips for Peter to cook in a traditional style. Moments like these highlight the strong connections he has made over the years.
Despite the evolving nature of the job, Peter continues to find motivation in the stability the role provides and the meaningful interactions he has with passengers. His dedication and work ethic have been key to his long-standing career, and his advice to new drivers is simple but effective: embrace every opportunity, work hard, and always be willing to go the extra mile.
As Peter looks to the future, he remains deeply connected to the community he has served for three decades. He continues to appreciate the company’s commitment to its drivers and is thankful for the ongoing support that has shaped his journey.
